Pros and Cons of Backyard Chickens — 27 Comments

  1. Thank-you for sharing these detailed pros and cons. I’ve raised chickens my whole life and so it is easy for me to overlook some of those cons as they have just become so “normal” to me :)- but for those who are getting into chickens for the first time, these points would come to be of GREAT use! Thanks for writing such a thorough and insightful post! 🙂 🙂

  2. Great post! We’ve had chickens for awhile and I think this would’ve been something informational to read prior to starting our flock. It definitely lets you know what you will be getting into. Thanks for sharing at the Homeacre Hop! Please join us again soon!

    • Hi! I really want to get into chickens, but my parents are not convinced. I have a friend who has chickens and it has inspired me to start a flock, does anybody have advice on convincing my parents?
      Thank you!

      • Tell your parents that first and foremost, having chickens will teach you more about responsibility and work ethic than not having animals at all, and it’s a great way to become just a little bit more self sufficient considering the eggs and possible meat you will procure. It’s frankly a breath of fresh air to find someone of your generation interested in the out of doors and a little hard work as opposed to only interested in social media and handheld technology. Your parents should be, and no doubt are very proud of you! Good Luck and happy farming

  3. It’s funny when I tell people the #1 reason I got a small backyard flock of chickens isn’t for the eggs. It’s for the compost! They’re composting machines. Using the Deep Litter Method in their large run where I cover their Nitrogen rich manure with Carbons like dry leaves, straw, dry grass clippings, etc means I’m never giving the expensive garden center compost money again!

    Thanks for the post.

  4. I love that you pointed out both sides of the “chicken” coin. I think sometimes advocates (myself included) forget that poultry keeping ISN’T for everyone. Thanks for taking the time to share this on The 104 Homestead Friday Blog Hop!

  5. This is a well-thought-out and comprehensive list! Good for you for writing it all down. People don’t always think about the cons, and when a living creature is concerned especially, those difficult things should be considered, too.

  6. Nice post! I love my backyard chickens too!
I would like to add something to the “con” side that I don’t often see. Under ‘conflicts with wildlife’ – chickens as predators themselves! While they do great for pest control, they are indiscriminate and will eat small reptiles and young birds too! After rescuing a hatchling box turtle last winter, I started having chicken-free zones in the hard to help the local wildlife out!

    • True, Lora, chickens are indiscriminate hunters, which may be a good argument for not truly free ranging them. I find complete free ranging too dangerous for the chickens anyway, and keep mine within a large fenced in yard.

  12. Thank you! I’ve been considering backyard chickens for awhile. Your article answered some of the caretaking questions that I’ve had. Your chickens are beautiful! Is it better to have one variety, or do they mix well? (socially, I guess) ?

  13. When you say that it takes about an hour per day to properly care for the chickens, what size flock are you referring to? I would only be able to have 3-4 hens if I decide to do this, so I am trying to figure out the time commitment. I don’t want to skimp on their care at all. Thanks.

  14. Sorry…another question! We live in CT, and it can get very cold in the winter. What should I do to keep the chickens warm enough? I wouldn’t have the option of bringing them inside the house. Thanks again!

  15. Thank you! my mom wants to buy chickens but i do not like them and need cons so she won’t get them, because i have wanted a dog my whole life but she wants chickens instead. so thanks again!
